Soliciting Political Contributions

Most candidates and committee members fear asking others for political contributions. However, moving out of our comfort zone and asking for monetary donations can be a rewarding experience if we keep the following principles in mind.

Why Do People Give?
1. To get access to elected officials.
2. Ego - it makes them feel good.
3. Belief in the candidate or the Republican Party.
4. Fear of the consequences of not giving.
5. To reward candidates or the Republican Party for past performance.
6. Peer pressure.
7. Friendship for a candidate or committee member.
8. To effect public policy. (This is the reason most people give)
9. Party loyalty.

1. They feel exploited.
2. The appeal is too vague.
3. The appeal is unrealistic.

Fundraising

The most dreaded job for a candidate is to raise money for the campaign. However, fund-raising is an important ingredient for the success of a grassroots Republican committee or a candidate’s campaign strategy. Fund-raising activities can take many forms from selling pizzas to holding a flea market. But the most effective fund-raising activity combines the promotion of Republican candidates and principles with raising money. For example, a candidate breakfast, picnic, reception, or dinner which provides supporters with the opportunity to meet the candidates and obtain campaign information also can be a great fund-raising opportunity. Too many times, we forget to promote Republican principles and candidates as an integral part of raising money. Candidates should start their fund-raising effort with family and friends who know them best. Explain why you are running and ask for their support–financial and campaign help. Then determine what other fund-raising activities you should start, e.g selling T-shirts, cups, or other items with the names of candidates or Republican principles printed on them. An overlooked, but very effective means of fund-raising is to send out a fund-raising solicitation through the mail. This letter should include an inspirational message describing why the candidate is running or what the local committee’s goals are for the near future and the upcoming races. You can also include a questionaire asking for opinions on important issues. This letter should be sent to registered Republicans in your district who vote regularly. Use the RCAC bulk mail account to save mailing costs. Although there are some upfront costs and work for a fund-raising letter, the income from this solicitation can be surprising. The solicitation letter can also help you to recruit new volunteers and candidates and to understand the concerns of the voters.
